Protein Powder when Breastfeeding

 Why consume protein powders?

Protein powders aren’t just for body builders. These concentrated forms of food proteins are a great dietary supplement and protein boost.

Protein is an important part of every diet. Protein provides a slowly metabolized source of energy in addition to the amino acids needed to make new proteins.*

It’s no longer just fitness enthusiasts who consume protein, as more and more people are discovering the benefit of consuming protein.

Protein shakes are a quick and convenient way to get high-quality protein without having to cook or dig through what foods provide the most protein naturally.

How can Protein Powder help in Pregnancy or when breastfeeding?

If you’re reading this, you are most likely a mother yourself, or soon to be. Many new mums struggle with finding a way to get enough protein during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The early mornings and disrupted nights of Motherhood, especially while breastfeeding, can really take a toll on the body.

The same can be said for pregnancy, as many women suffer with sickness. About 70% of pregnant women get morning sickness. In about 3%, nausea and vomiting can be severe.*   In the event that you are suffering from sickness, consuming a protein shake can be a helpful way to ensure you are still consuming enough protein and vitamins. Those suffering from morning sickness can sip a protein shake throughout their day, to keep their sickness at bay.

Protein is essential for the production of breast milk, and it passes from the woman to the baby to nourish and support growth. Breastfeeding women require an additional 25 grams of protein per day*, so a protein shake is an easy and convenient way to meet your daily needs.

Is Protein Powder Safe when you’re Breastfeeding?

When you are breastfeeding, substances in your body can make their way from your bloodstream to your milk. This means that things you ingest can affect the composition of your breast milk and get into your baby. You might have experienced this already with your breastfeed baby suffering from gas or having different coloured poos, based on something you ate (like leafy greens for example). However, although medications and herbs can get into your breast milk, there is no evidence that the foods you eat have a distinct effect on your breast milk.*

So is protein powder safe in pregnancy?

Yes. However, not all protein powders are created equal. Some have added ingredients or hidden chemicals that aren’t safe to eat while you’re Breastfeeding or Pregnant — and actually not best to be consumed regardless!

Some protein powders contain added thickeners, artificial flavouring, colouring, and are high in sugars. More specifically, if you are pregnant, avoid any protein powders that have Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a retinol, and too much of it can harm your baby's development.*

Always make sure to read through the list of ingredients, if they seem simple and easy to understand, like our, then you’re probably good to go!
